The little girl had fallen into a hole in her backyard. It really wasn't her fault. She was chasing a ball across the grass and the ground had given out from under her!
The hole was too deep for her to climb out, and too narrow. In fact, it was so narrow that she'd become stuck and couldn't move her arms and legs. It was dark, except for that little bit of daylight way above her head. And it was scary!
Time dragged on and finally her mommy began to wonder where she was. She couldn't hear her playing in the yard, so she went to check. The little girl was nowhere in sight. Her mom began to call her name, looking here, hunting there!
After a frantic search, her mother found the hole. It was a wellhead from a long ago abandoned well. One that had been boarded over and left. One in which the boards had rotted and gave way when the little girl walked onto them. A distraught phone call to the local police department set off a series of events that few could predict.
When the paramedics and police arrived, they faced a rescue of highly unusual circumstances. Somehow this little girl had fallen twenty feet down an eight-inch well pipe. She got stuck on some tree roots, and ended up with one leg above her body with its foot pressing against her forehead. Lifting her back up the pipe would be impossible because of her situation.
The Rescue Team decided to dig a parallel hole and then a crosscut tunnel to the girl's position, but their efforts were stymied because of a large rock which resisted drilling and couldn't be blasted.
A second hole was suggested and a mining specialist from New Mexico (of course) was flown in to supervise the attempt. Eventually the hole was dug, the crosscut made. Finding the right man for going into the hole took some time. Making an opening in the pipe directly under the girl and pulling her down and out into the parallel shaft took even more time.
More than 58 hours after the little girl had fallen into the well, she was pulled back to the surface strapped to a board. She was hussled into an ambulance and whisked away to the local hospital.
This is a true story. You might remember it happening some years ago in 1987 because it received massive national and even international attention by the media. The little girl, Jessica, graduated from high school a few years ago and is alive today because of one thing. Perseverance.
Perseverance by her Rescue Team. They were determined to get her out alive. They didn't let obstacles or failures get in their way.
Perseverance is a quality you must unwaveringly apply to your home business to obtain success.
I have a friend who pronounces the word as "preseverance" because she says that one must "Press On" to accomplish the goal. It seems to me a reasonable and memorable change!
If your goal is a viable, growing, sustainable home based business, then you too must Press On. No matter what obstacles are in front of you. No matter if you've failed before.
You must Press On through unreasonably irate customers. You must Press On through periods of no sales. You must Press On through stiff competition. You must Press On through poor dial-up connections, downed servers, sick computers, and mountains of taxation and other regulatory paperwork. Changing, adapting, improving, innovating.
Irrefutable research shows that perseverance is one of the Big Keys to a highly successful business. It also shows that Perseverance is a factor of faith. Your faith stokes the fires of determination, and that determination produces a highly refined perseverance in the crucible of hard times.
You and I must Press On and persevere no matter what.
The alternative is completely unacceptable.
